Khyal Muhammad was born in 1935 in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, into the legendary Patiala Gharana tradition. He was the son of the renowned classical singer Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan, who recognized his extraordinary musical potential from infancy and began his training in the deepest traditions of North Indian classical music.

His rigorous training began at age five under his father's strict supervision, encompassing not just vocal techniques but the entire philosophy of classical music. By his teens, he had mastered complex ragas and could perform for hours with impeccable technique and profound emotional expression.
